SPORTS EDUCATION PROGRAMME
The Sports Education Programme (SEP) is a collaborative partnership between Singapore Sports Council (SSC) and the Ministry of Education (MOE). Under SEP, each school is provided with a $10,000 dollar-to-dollar matching grant for them to take up sports programmes from an endorsed list. The SEP aims to advocate the importance of sports education, encourage sports participation in schools and increase sporting opportunities for the young.
Sports programmes are assessed by a panel comprising representatives from the SSC, MOE, schools, sports educators and practitioners to qualify for endorsement under the SEP.
Our cycling programmes have been endorsed since the inception of SEP in 2005. For 2010, we have
:
Safe Cycling Workshop
A 2 x 2 hours course where beginners will be taught how to cycle and students who are already able to cycle, basic bike control skills.
Explorers On Wheels
A 4 x 2 hours course where beginners will be taught how to cycle and students who are already able to cycle, bike control skills. Students will also get to learn what to do when problems such as dropped chain occurs. Also includes an excursion to a park where students get a chance to put into practice what they had learnt during the course.
Ubin Explorers
A half day programme where students are given clues to a scavenger hunt around Ubin Island. A briefing will be conducted prior to actual ride to equip students with the appropriate skills.
Countryside Explorers
A leisure ride through the various farms in the Kranji Countryside. A typical ride will include farms like cow farm, goat farm, frog farm and vegetable farm; lasts around 3.5 hours.
Connect Ride
A fuss-free ride on the Eastern Park Connector Network. Free from vehicular traffic, this is perfect for cyclists of all levels, especially for those not ready for road cycling and yet do not wish to be confined to 'going up and down' East Coast Park. The shorter loop takes 3.5 hours while the longer loops takes approximately 5 hours to complete.
Fun On Wheels (For Special Ed Schools)
This programme aims to get children comfortable pedalling independently and be able to enjoy a ride in a safe environment, such as a park. Besides being a great form of exercise, it also introduces cycling as an alternative mode of transporting themselves from point A to point B (vs walking/running)
